Yesterday Debbie and I explored Wheatgrass Canyon. Despite the fact that both of us have lived in the valley for several years, neither of us had ever hiked here. Can't believe we waited so long. The hike was beautiful. We were a bit early for all of the trees to have their leaves but it was still amazing. The limestone rock formations, which jut out of the west side of the canyon, attract rock climbers to this quiet retreat. Equestrians can appreciate the remote location and mellow terrain as well. The only down side to our hike were the multiple stream crossings that we were not prepared for. Everything I had read said that crossing was not a problem. I agree, as long as you have water/hiking shoes (at least in the spring). We ended up having to take off our shoes a few times near the top of canyon. Really, it was not a big deal but a nice FYI. If you want to escape the heat of the valley mid-summer, this would be ideal. With the gentle slope plus plenty of shade and water the whole way, Wheatgrass Canyon will offer the perfect get-away with the kids.
