So sad for all of you who had to miss a beautiful day on the Skyline Trail. My ride began in the parking lot at Windsurfers Beach. About four people had just finished a swim in preparation for this weekends Xterra race. They were conversing about their next event for the day - the mountain bike portion of the race. I secretly smiled to myself knowing that their ride would be crowded with other mountain bikers similarly trying out the race course, while mine would be spent on the mountain just North of theirs in quiet bliss. Of course, I was right. While cars lined the trailhead at Wheeler Creek, I climbed and climbed and climbed (honestly, Skyline is non-stop, heart pounding climbing which on normal days I often avoid) with not another person in sight. When I reached the first "summit" I stopped (all by myself) and drank in the beauty. I really wanted to keep going to the next lookout (about 3.5 miles further) but decided to just try the first mile or so since I was alone. It was truly a lovely quiet morning and the views were amazing. On the way back down I ran into a couple of guys who had stopped near mile marker 2 to catch their breath. I asked how far they planned to go and they replied "Lewis Peak" (about a 15-19 mile total ride). With a wide smile, I wished them luck and continued down contemplating why I never chose to become a motivational therapist (that was a little joke). They were the only people I saw on the trail today. Lucky me!
